When it comes to matters of the heart, we think Birmingham is THE sanctuary of love. The beautiful creators and business owners in this city know how to make an impression that lasts. While this community is a remarkable pool of talent and innovation, we tried our best to narrow down some of our favorite spots to grab a Valentines Gift for your honey. If romance isn’t on your February forecast, then by-all-means make this a gift guide for yourself. After the last two years, YOU DESERVE IT.

Love planted a rose, and the world turned sweet.

Just a moment in this little wonderland is self care at it’s finest. Their vintage accessories and ornamental novelties will have the special person in your life feeling like a golden girl. This women owned local haven will always have the most unique gifts for yourself or the ones you love most. The wonderful founders of Cala, Josh and Melanie Cosio, want to bring something bright to your mornings. Born and raised in California (Cala = California + Alabama), they moved to Birmingham, AL in the summer of 2016 without ever stepping foot in the state before. The pair began roasting coffee in 2021 and have cultivated such a special beverage experience. Each blend is unique and aromatic. Valentines Day is all about giving love and comfort to those that you care for most and the heartfelt blends from Cala do just that. Their light roast is a marriage of Floral notes, Berries, Dried Apricot, Honey, and Jasmine while their dark roast has deep notes of cocoa and nuts. Give a gift of warmth and rejuvenation. Cala recently announced that they will be opening their FIRST brick and mortar in Cahaba Heights this year, so keep your eyes pealed for the in-person shopping experience to come. Until then, you can find them online or at one of their many pop up locations!

Flowers are never a cliche at Gaia. The handcrafted bouquets that come out of this stem shop are truly the beauty that we all need in our lives. The deep tones in their Valentines Day collection conjure complete romance. We love that you can order an arrangement crafted by the floral goddess herself, or you can take a peak inside their gorgeous shop and create a bouquet on your own. We’ll take an entire garden to-go, please!

Naughty But Nice

KettlE Corn Co.

Naughty But Nice is the local artisanal kettle corn company of our dreams. They have lovingly coined the term, “Popheads” for their ever expanding fan base and we couldn’t agree with that title more. NBN has taken one of the most universally beloved snacks and exponentially raised the bar. Our favorite flavors are Green Apple Pie and French Toast. Whether you are a sweet tooth or prefer something savory like their Eugene’s Hot Chicken flavor, they have every taste bud in mind. If your date could do without the chocolate, we think a freshly popped bag of artisanal kettle corn will do the trick. You can shop their amazing line-up online or visit their storefront!

Studio 264

Meredith Taylor is the phenomenal visionary behind this little piece of heaven in Birmingham. Studio 264 is straight out of all our 1970’s fantasies. Their clay and multimedia accessories have an incredible ability to completely captivate anyone who beholds them. We have truly never seen anything like Meredith’s work. Her earrings are inspired and will always capture all the attention in a room. Studio 264 is launching their Sleepover Collection for Valentines Day and we couldn’t be more obsessed! We would happily fall in love with anyone who gifts us a pair of their earrings this holiday season - no glass slipper needed! You can shop their collection on their website or check out their instagram for their next pop-up location.

Chocolata is an ethereal chocolate shop, beautifully nestled downtown on 2nd Avenue North. Each treat is incredibly special and always starts with the highest quality chocolate, made with ingredients from South America. You will immediately feel like you have arrived in a chocolate nirvana upon entering this place. The smell of sipping chocolate and bonbons fill the air and it’s truly something straight out of a fairytale. We love how it’s not only the taste of these delicacies that are elevated. Chocolata has a remarkable way of making each treat just as captivating to look at as they are to taste. If you want your honey to feel special this Valentines Day, Chocolata is the place for you. You can visit their gorgeous storefront and follow their instagram for the most luxurious sugar rush.

House of Rêve Brand Launch

Left: Julianne Dean, Right: Scout Campbell

Julianne Dean started working at Bustle this past spring, and last month she launched her new fashion brand, House of Rêve, with her best friend, Scout Campbell. Julianne and Scout also run a balloon styling business in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa called For Love and Loons. These ladies are so talented and full of amazing ideas, and we are so excited to share their most recent one with you. We asked Julianne a few questions about House of Rêve so we could give you all the details!

What made you decide to start House of Rêve?

Being best friends with different body types, we have learned everyone has insecurities even when you don't realize it. Fashion has always allowed us to express ourselves and feel confident in our own skin. By creating House of Rêve our mission has always been to do this for others by eliminating the standard that there is only one definition of beauty.

How did you come up with your business name?

This took us a minute to get right. We knew we wanted something unique and something that really represented us as a brand. After going through a million different names, we first landed on the name Stevie. However, clearly we went in a different direction. The word Rêve means ‘to dream’ in french, and was actually the name of my first design collection. This became such a key part of House of Rêve, because we wanted to make every girl feel like a "dream girl" . We run the store out of our home in Tuscaloosa and thought "house of" combined both the fashion flare and our actual reality.

Tell us about you and your business partner. How did you meet and decide to start your business?

My business partner is also my roommate and best friend. We have always shared a love for fashion and creativity. We have known each other since 6th grade. In fact, House of Rêve is our third business together. We ran a t-shirt business through instagram when we were in high school, and realized we were the perfect team when it comes to running a business. In college we decided to start our own balloon styling company, For Love & Loons, which we still continue today.

I am so lucky to be able to do what I love, especially when I get to do it with my best friend. House of Rêve is built on our two different styles. Scout has a western chic style and I bring the west coast flare. Having had three businesses together now, we have really gotten to know each other and how we work together. Knowing each of our strengths and weaknesses has become a huge part of why we work so well together. What I lack, she has and vise versa. Could not do this without her talented self and I am so thankful for her!

If there is one thing you wish every girl knew about fashion what would it be?

At House of Rêve we strive to bring out the most confident you and I believe fashion allows us to do just that. It gives us a way to express ourselves without talking. If we could say one thing to the women that shop with us it would be - you are so much more than the size of your dress, the tag does not define you! You are fearfully and wonderfully made and YOU and your own style are what makes fashion so fun.

What can we expect from House of Rêve in the future?

We would love to have a Rêve Girl campaign where we can feature some of our amazing customers. We may even try out carrying mens clothing.

Valentine's Pop-Up Shop

Last month we had the pleasure of hosting our second annual Valentine's Day Pop Up Shop. We love creating a "one stop shop" for all of the Valentine's Day essentials. We had gorgeous floral arrangements by Kathleen Varner of Edna. K Design, jewelry crafted by Holland's Trinkets, mouth watering chocolate cakes baked to perfection by Telia Johnson Cakes, precious "lovey dovey" cards by Empress Stationary, and calligrapher, Sarah Moore, of Pursuit Creative to personalize each card.

Go ahead and mark your calendar for February 14th 2018 - it's only going to get better!

The Multi Wrap Gown

We are thrilled to be carrying the Eliza & Ethan multi-wrap gown! These jersey knit dresses are $180, one-size (comfortably fit size 0-14), come in 22 colors and can be worn in dozens of ways. Plus, each dress comes with a carrying tote and matching bandeau!

The ultimate bridesmaid dress, each of your gals can express herself while you have the confidence that everyone will look great. It also makes a fab rehearsal or going-away dress for the bride!

Kate Morris Jewelry

Our good friend Kate Morris is an amazing jewelry artist. She creates stunning pieces that go with virtually any outfit, and the story behind her company is rather interesting. When Kate was 16, she traveled to Bolivia on a mission trip. While she was there, she discovered all kinds of people using a vast variety of materials and colors to create art. She also discovered different types of gemstones, metals, and the jewelry making process.

From then on she was sold. She was inspired to experiment and make jewelry of her on. It began as just making some pieces for herself, which led to making pieces as gifts for friends and selling to friends, which in turn led to online sales, local stores, and artisan shows.

Today, because of her love for missions, at least 10% of every order goes to the International Mission Board. We, at Bustle, are big fans of Kate Morris, and her jewelry is absolutely exquisite!
